LPS refutes claims of abuse while arresting woman

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Police have arrested a woman on charges of flight from police, resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer.

On Thursday, June 18 at approximately 1:00 am, officers saw an SUV that did not have its headlights on at the intersection of 10 Street North and 5 Ave North.

The member tried to pull up beside the vehicle to advise the driver to turn on her headlights, but she allegedly proceeded into the intersection and headed east on 5 Ave North.

The police officer turned on his lights and siren, reportedly resulting in the SUV accelerating and turning into an alley.

A few minutes later, a second officer saw the SUV parked on the 300 block of 12 Street North.

The suspect, 20-year-old Kosovare Ajdini, wrote in a Facebook post that she was just a kid and did not see the sirens so she and her friend continued on their normal route home.

“As I was taking the corner that leads to my house a police officer rolled down his window, I didn’t see so I proceeded to take my turn that leads to my house. I parked my car and the next thing I hear is sirens, so we just kind of hid by the side of my house. I didn’t do anything wrong so I don’t know why I did it, I just wanted to get to bed, yeah I understand that wasn’t the best choice,” reads the post.

A police dog tracked the women to a small crawl space between the fence and house.

According to LPS, the first woman was identified as the driver of the SUV and was “extremely belligerent and refused to obey verbal commands. She was placed under arrest for flight from police, and began to actively resist the officer.”

The police service then claims a brief struggle ensued and she elbowed the officer in the head.

Ajdini, however, wrote that the dogs had bit her multiple times and the officers repeatedly pushed her to the ground. She disputed the reports that she elbowed anybody.

The second woman, who was a passenger, was said to be fully cooperative with police.

“While searching the driver incidental to arrest, she continued to swear loudly at police then spit in the arresting officer’s face and on his shoulder,” says LPS. “As a result, a spit mask was put on her to prevent the officer from being further exposed to bodily fluids. LPS will work within Alberta Health protocols to determine whether COVID-19 testing is required.”

In the media release from police, they say the bite marks to the woman’s leg were minor and did not require stitches or any further medical examination. Ajdini said in her post that she wanted to go to the hospital but emergency responders refused.

Police say Ajdini holds a Class 7 driver’s license, which has a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol. She reportedly had a blood-alcohol level of .03, resulting in her license being suspended for 30 days and her vehicle being seized for seven days.

In addition to the charges of flight from police, assaulting a police officer, and resisting arrest, she was issued tickets for driving a vehicle with no headlights, a learner driver operating a vehicle without proper supervision, and operating a motor vehicle contrary to a restriction for alcohol.

Ajdini has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on September 22.
