Lethbridge Police’s Run for Special Olympics goes virtual this year

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The eighth annual Lethbridge Police Run has been adjusted because of COVID-19.

Due to restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the event, which is organized in partnership with the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) will be held virtually this year.

Participants can choose a distance, either a half marathon, 10-kilometres or five-kilometres, and complete the race using a fitness app to log their time.

Alternatively, participants can run for fun with no official time recorded.

The LPS Run is a family-friendly event with proceeds from the event supporting more than 3,300 Alberta Special Olympics athletes.

All runners who register by August 15 will receive a commemorative LPS Run t-short, a finisher’s medal and their own personal bib number. According to Lethbridge Police, the shirts will be ‘distinctly Canadian and commemorate what an unprecedented year 2020 has been’.

Participants can run their race between October 1 and October 9, with the theme for this year being ‘miles apart but closer to the goal’.

“We’re disappointed that we can’t all run together in the beautiful southern Alberta coulees, but having a virtual race means people from around the world can join in,” said Constable Kara Hagen in a release.

“We would love to see people from far and wide hitting the trails in their LPS Run shirts.”

The registration cost for runners aged 12 and over is $50 for the half marathon, and $40 for the 10 and 5K distances.

For children aged six to 11, it is $20 for the 10 and 5K runs, and $10 for toddlers up to age 5 for the 5K.
