Mobility and Accessibility Master Plan presented to Lethbridge council

Jun 22, 2020 | 5:36 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB– Lethbridge could soon become more accessible.

Lethbridge City Council was presented the Mobility and Accessibility Master Plan today (June 22) in an attempt to talk about accessibility within the city.

After two and a half years of researching and examining Lethbridge’s accessibility, Chris Witkowski and the Mobility Accessibility Committee say the time to talk about it is now.

The city wants to make sure that recreation, transportation, housing, education, and employment opportunities are economically and physically accessible to all residents.

After research, the community believes the following need to be considered:

• Winter City Challenges

• Access-a-Ride Capacity

• Lack of Accessible Taxis

• More Public Education Required

• More Accessible Change Rooms

• Improved Wayfinding and Signage

• More Accessible Parking Stalls

However, what has been done is:

• Increased Signal Timing

• Facility Services Design Guide

• Key2Access Trial

• Standards Revisions

• Land Use Bylaw Revisions

• Audio & Visual Notifications on Transit

Councillor Jeffrey Coffman believes this master plan is vital to Lethbridge.

“I was privileged to take part in the cheerleader’s program a couple of years ago where I spent the whole day in a wheelchair I actually ripped off one of the doors upstairs.. the accessibility just isn’t there to be able to open a door..demonstrates challenges to actually see it, to experience it.”

After presenting the plan to council, councillors have adopted the presentation to the agenda for the July 13th meeting.
