LPS seize stolen vehicle, arrest three for drug trafficking

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has apprehended three people on a wide range of charges.

As part of an investigation into drug trafficking activities, they found a man believed to be driving a stolen truck.

The man met up with two women in the parking lot of a hotel on Mayor Magrath Drive South and the trio entered a room.

When the man exited the room, he was arrested.

The man allegedly had $1,100 in cash, small quantities of meth and fentanyl, and the keys to the truck.

Police claim to have found an extendable baton, a large knife, and a fake driver’s license in the vehicle.

When officers entered the hotel room, they say they found a taser in plain sight. The room reportedly also had assorted drug paraphernalia, including a scale and packaging, and three pre-portioned packages of fentanyl.

The two women in the room were arrested.

Paul Wayne McCarthy, 40, of Coalhurst, was remanded in custody to appear in court on June 25 on the following charges:

  • Possession of stolen property over $5,000
  • Possession of the proceeds of crime
  • Two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited/restricted weapon
  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Possession of a forged document
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Five counts of failing to comply with release conditions
  • Multiple violations under the Traffic Safety Act

Shawntaya Gage Iron Shirt, 24, of Lethbridge, was released from custody to appear in court on September 24 on the following charges:

  • Knowingly possessing a prohibited/restricted weapon
  • Possession of a controlled substance.

Kayla Mae Robertson, 26, of Coalhurst, was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on September 24 on the following charges:

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of the proceeds of crime
  • Knowingly possessing a prohibited/restricted weapon.
