Nanton honey producer offers sweet deal for consumers

NANTON, AB. — June is National Pollinator Month – a time to raise awareness about pollinators and their contributions. With that in mind, a Nanton beekeeper has found an interesting way to connect with customers.

Kristen hall is the owner of Bee My Honey.

The operation is relatively small, with 28 hives, including a number of hives in the family yard in Nanton. Kristen says children watch the bees as they fly in and out of their hives.

“We have a bench that is probably about a metre away from the front of the hives and that’s the guideline for the children to go and sit at that bench – they’re not allowed to go any further – and they just love watching the bees,”

There is a self-serve honey hutch, where people can purchase honey using the ‘honour system’. In addition, for $100, Hall lets you adopt a hive, which comes with a number of benefits.

“With that, you get five weekly updates on your hive, the opportunity to paint your hive if you want, one jar of honey, a free hive tour and the one that they like the most, is that they get to name their hive’s queen. So, we have some pretty cool queen names out there – lots of famous people now have bees in their name.”

Examples include Queen Latifa and Bee-Once.

Hall says it’s all part of the community involvement, which is important for sales and letting people feel like they’re part of the business. At this point, demand for their honey is bigger than supply and their goal is to double in size, until they can’t do it anymore.
