More than 84-mm of rain in two days – and words of caution

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — After days of drab, wet weather, the sun was out to shine on Canada Day. That sun will be needed to dry out the fields and gardens.

Environment Canada reports Lethbridge and the immediate area received a combined 84.3-mm of rain for Monday and Tuesday of this week. 77.4-mm of that fell on Tuesday alone, although some areas in the region may have recorded more.

For all of June, Lethbridge received 156.1-mm or rain.

That much rain has had an impact on rivers and retention ponds. With that in mind, residents are reminded that riverbanks are water saturated and may give way if you walk along them. Also, water retention ponds are not a safe place – the depth can be deceiving. Most communities place them out of bounds for water activities.

Some of the ponds in Lethbridge have over flowed and it is not wise to wade into the overflow areas, as the ground is saturated and slippery.

Also, tree limbs have been brought down by the heavy rain. If you find a downed limb or electrical wires, call the city immediately.
