Summer hours returning to Waste & Recycling Centre starting July 6

Jul 6, 2020 | 6:00 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB– Beginning Monday, July 6th, Lethbridge residents can take advantage of longer hours at the City’s Waste & Recycling Centre (landfill).

The Centre will return to summer hours and will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday.

This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the switch to summer hours had been delayed.

The City is sharing some tips to help residents of Lethbridge manage their recycling and waste:

Food and Yard Waste: Nearly half of what ends up in Lethbridge’s garbage could be composted, like branches, leaves, grass clippings and food waste. The City encourages residents to try leaving clippings on the lawn, known as ‘grasscycling,’ or backyard composting food scraps at home. Backyard composters can be purchased from the City. For more information visit https://www.lethbridge.ca/living-here/Waste-Recycling/Pages/Backyard-Composters.aspx. Residents can also visit any of the City’s three Yard Waste Sites to dispose of yard waste and grass clippings. The sites are open 7 days a week, 9 am to 7 pm.

Hazardous Waste: With the warm weather and more time at home, many are taking extra time to clean out their garages or sheds. Remember, hazardous products like paint, aerosols, cleaners, fire extinguishers, propane or helium tanks should never be placed in the garbage or recycling for disposal. These products pose major risks to staff and the environment when disposed of incorrectly. The City offers a free collection area for household hazardous waste, located at the Waste & Recycling Centre.

Blue Cart Recycling: With online shopping on the rise in recent months, the City is reminding residents to be mindful of how to properly dispose of packaging from shipping. Many packaging products such as cardboard, paper and hard plastics can be recycled in the blue cart, however other common shipping products, like styrofoam, padded envelopes, or bubble wrap cannot be recycled in the blue cart and cause problems at the City’s sorting facility. To save space, residents are reminded to break down all cardboard boxes before placing them in the blue cart.

City officials are encouraging people to visit http://curbside.lethbridge.ca to see what days pickups are.
