Alberta Health orders closure of all 10 units in Lethbridge’s Jade Court complex

LETHBRIDGE, AB – 10 units in a townhouse complex in Lethbridge have been forced to close.

Between June 26 and July 6, Alberta Health has issued closure orders for all of the units under the Public Health Act.

The homes are located at 638 8 Street South.

The exact infractions found in a series of inspections vary for each unit, but many are common in all or most units. Just a few of the infractions include:

  • Evidence of rodents
  • Carpets being covered in animal excrement and general filth
  • Junk and debris leftover from years of previous tenants in the basements
  • Surface mold in the ceilings of the bathrooms and other areas
  • Moisture damage in the walls
  • Stoves not working as intended
  • Water leaks from washrooms and kitchen sinks
  • Openable windows having missing or damaged insect screens
  • Entrance doors being damaged due to forced entry
  • Towel racks being ripped out of walls
  • Back steps missing railings
  • Smoke detectors not being operational
  • A “very used” mattress
  • Illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia

Residents of all 10 properties must vacate on or before July 30, 2020.

The owner of Jade Court, Y.K. Tam, must take steps to fix all of the infractions.

As of the time of publication, Tam did not respond to LNN’s request for comment.
