Whoops: city reverses position on river valley fire ban, still in effect

Jul 9, 2020 | 1:50 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Just hours after the City of Lethbridge announced that they were lifting the fire ban in the coulees, they said it actually remains in place.

Acting Fire Marshall Marc Royer told LNN that after the original story was put out, someone “higher than him” saw the announcement and determined that the fire ban is still necessary.

The concern is that allowing the use of campfires in designated fire pits would likely result in people congregating in groups close to one another, thus increasing the risk of spreading COVID-19.

“Residents are reminded that COVID-19 is still in our community and we must remain vigilant by maintaining physical distancing at all times and limiting social gatherings,” reads an updated statement from the city.
