LETHBRIDGE, AB– Work has started to resume transit to normal routes beginning August 4th.

COVID-19 has severely impacted everyone and transit in the city has a completely different look because of it.

When routes resume to normal, proper health regulations will have to be followed and riders may be required to wear masks.

Alberta will be giving transit riders 226,000 masks that will be available to riders when taking transit.

“Safety is still our number one priority,” says Transit Manager for the City of Lethbridge Kevin Ponech.

Ponech said that only 12% of transit is actually being used, he also said that if the event these normal routes don’t give transit more use, they may have to consider other options.

On April 8, Lethbridge Transit suspended conventional routes and moved to a ride-by-reservation system to manage physical distancing requirements and the decreased rider volumes.

This system has been maintained, at no cost to the rider, throughout the COVID-19 shutdown.

“We’ve heard from the community that many people are not using Transit because the ride-by-reservation system is not as convenient as regular routes,” says Ponech.

The city says to ensure the safety of staff and riders, fareboxes will be regularly sanitized. Cash will be accepted but the use of a Breeze Card is preferred.
