Province confirms another six COVID cases in Lethbridge Friday, 15 for South Zone

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has released its report for COVID-19 for Friday, July 17.

105 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 9,219. Of those, 859 cases are still active while 8,193 people have recovered.

Thursday was the first time in over two months that the number of new infections was in the triple digits, so Friday’s report is the second in a row.

Of the new cases, 15 were in the South Health Zone. The local communities with the biggest jumps were Lethbridge with another six infections and Fort Macleod with four.

In the month of July so far, Lethbridge has seen more cases almost every day. We reported on July 3 that the city had seen 43 infections to date, but just two weeks later, that has risen to 76.

In the South Health Zone, four patients are in hospital and two have been admitted to intensive care units. Provincially, 68 are in hospital and 13 in ICU.

Another two Albertans have died from COVID-19, one each in the Calgary and Edmonton Zones. To date, the virus has claimed the lives of 167 people in the province.

566,972 tests have been completed to date including 6,472 in the last 24 hours.

The regional breakdown for COVID-19 in Alberta is a follows:

  • Calgary zone – 5,785 cases, 385 active
    • 113 deaths (one new)
    • 204,301 tests
  • South zone – 1,479 cases, 92 active
    • 13 deaths
    • 35,308 tests
  • Edmonton zone – 1,334 cases, 213 active
    • 23 deaths (one new)
    • 161,897 tests
  • North zone – 410 cases, 99 active
    • 17 deaths
    • 39,597 tests
  • Central zone – 187 cases, 92 active
    • One death
    • 36,143 tests

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,121 cases, three active, nine deaths
  • Lethbridge – 76 cases (six new), 30 active
    • West Lethbridge – 38 cases (five new), 18 active
    • South Lethbridge – 23 cases (one new), seven active
    • North Lethbridge – 15 cases, five active
  • Cardston County – 55 cases (one new), 12 active, two deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 51 cases, three active, one death
  • County of Warner – 45 cases, three active, one death
  • Cypress County – 30 cases, zero active
  • County of Newell – 22 cases, two active
  • Fort Macleod – 20 cases (four new), 12 active
  • M.D. of Taber – 18 cases (one new), seven active
  • Lethbridge County – 17 cases (one new), 10 active
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 11 cases (two new), 10 active
  • County of Forty Mile – Eight cases, three active
  • Crowsnest Pass – One case, one active
