LETHBRIDGE, AB – Two seniors from Lethbridge have died as a result of COVID-19, the first in the city.

The Government of Alberta released Monday’s report on the virus, covering data from Friday, July 24 to Sunday, July 26.

In that time, 304 new cases were confirmed with 110 on Friday, 103 on Saturday, and 91 on Sunday. To date, 10,390 people have contracted the virus in Alberta. 1,430 cases are still active while 8,774 people have recovered.

Of the new cases, the South Health Zone saw another 30 infections. Lethbridge and Cardston County each had six more and the M.D. of Taber had another five.

“As we see in the case numbers, the curve is no longer flat in Alberta,” says Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw. “We all need to assess our own lives for where we were at risk of spreading or contracting the virus. All of us can make changes to our daily routines to prevent the spread of COVID.”

Over the weekend, Alberta Health reports that eight Albertans have died. Among them are two residents of Lethbridge – one man in his 70’s and the other was a man at least 80 years old.

“This is obviously a heartbreaking number to report. We cannot forget that this virus can have severe and even fatal impacts on our health. I would like to extend my condolences to the family and friends who have lost loved ones.”

As well, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of six people in the Edmonton zone, five of which occurred at the Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre. 78 infections and 12 deaths are linked to the outbreak at this facility.

“We all must take extra precautions any time we are going to be in contact with anyone who lives in a continuing care facility, who is over the age of 65, or who has underlying medical conditions,” adds Hinshaw.

To date, 186 Albertans have died from COVID-19.

88 people in the province are currently in hospital and 17 have been admitted to intensive care units (ICU).

651,335 tests have been completed in the province.
