Taber corn stands to open with “soft launch” this Thursday

TABER, AB – You can get your hands on the region’s world-famous corn this week.

James Johnson, Owner and Operator with Johnson Fresh Farms, says they are opening the first of their stands as early as Thursday, July 30.

It will be a bit of a “soft launch” with only a select few locations at first.

“I don’t know what kind of quantity or supply we’d have, but I’m sure we’d have a bit in Taber, some in Lethbridge, and like, on Wednesday, we’d know how many stands we’d think we can open up.”

By late next week, he expects to see their stands opened up across the region as normal.

A mid-June hail storm impacted about half of their crop. Of the damaged plants, Johnson thinks half would still be sellable.

“The stuff that didn’t get wrapped up by the hail actually looks beautiful.”

Since the storm, the weather across Southern Alberta has certainly improved.

Over the last week, the skies have been clear and temperatures have been high. Johnson says corn loves high heat, so it has been a great time for their farm lately.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, he is asking anyone hitting the stands in the coming weeks to practice physical distancing from other customers.

Staff will be equipped with face masks and hand sanitizer.
