LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta is continuing to provide extra supports to several homeless shelters across the province.

Back in March, $25-million was allocated to shelter spaces in Lethbridge, Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Grande Prairie, Lac La Biche, Lloydminster, and Drayton Valley.

Minister of Community and Social Services Rajan Sawhney says an additional $48-million will allow this will carry on.

“This means isolation and care centres will continue to operate through winter and into next spring, making sure individuals with no fixed address can self-isolate if they are sick or waiting for test results and can receive medical care if they need it.”

Homeless shelters, such as the Lethbridge Shelter and Resource Centre, are often the first line of contact for people seeking a safe place to stay.

“These organizations have been dedicated to providing everyone a warm, welcoming place to sleep where they have access to vital supports and services throughout the day and night,” adds Sawhney. “We are confident that with this funding, shelters will be able to continue providing the compassionate care that all Albertans deserve.”

A spokesperson from Sawhney’s ministry told LNN that the Lethbridge Shelter and Resource Centre will receive some of the $48-million, but they have not decided how much of that will be going to each community yet.
