New COVID cases continue to fall in Alberta, but Hinshaw asks everyone to remain vigilant

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has released Thursday’s report on COVID-19, detailing the numbers over the past 24 hours.

56 cases have been confirmed provincially, bringing the total to 11,296. Of those, 1,107 cases are active while 9,984 people have recovered.

Among the new infections, only three were in the South Health Zone, all of which are in South Lethbridge.

Another two Albertans have died as a result of the virus – one each in the Edmonton and Central zones.

76 people in the province are currently hospitalized and 19 have been admitted to intensive care units.

735,322 tests have been completed among 607,363 different Albertans.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says, overall, she is encouraged by today’s numbers.

It continues a weeklong trend of having fewer than 100 new cases per day.

“I am cautiously optimistic that Albertans are taking health measures more seriously including distancing, hand washing, and masking. Of course, we are not out of the woods yet. The spread of the virus over the coming weeks will depend on the choices we make this weekend and in the days and weeks ahead.”

She says it is likely we will continue to fight COVID-19 into 2021, so the more we can do now, the sooner things will get better.

“If you don’t have a mask, please go get one. If you haven’t instructed your kids on how to wear masks safely, take time to do that this weekend. If you’re going out to eat, shop, or be in close contact with others, make sure you’re feeling well, wash your hands, carry hand sanitizer, and follow all the guidance we’ve put out.”
