COVID cases surge in Alberta as 134 confirmed Friday

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has released Friday’s report on COVID-19, detailing the numbers over the past 24 hours.

134 cases were confirmed provincially, bringing the total to 11,430. Of those, 1,125 cases are active while 10,097 people have recovered

This includes seven new infections in the South Health Zone. Each of Lethbridge’s three sections had two more infections while the County of Newell saw one more.

Three Albertans have died as a result of the virus with one each in the South, Edmonton, and North Zones.

For the death in the South Zone, there was one death in Fort Macleod reported on July 23. It was removed from the geospatial map earlier this week. The community once again shows one confirmed death. It is unclear whether the one listed today is new or if it is the same one.

To date, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 208 people in the province.

68 people are currently hospitalized and 18 have been admitted to intensive care units.

743,885 tests have been administered to 613,221 different people.

The regional breakdown for COVID-19 in Alberta is a follows:

  • Calgary zone – 6,690 cases, 368 active
    • 114 deaths
    • 253,745 tests
  • Edmonton zone – 1,874 cases, 329 active
    • 52 deaths (one new)
    • 201,124 tests
  • South zone – 1,685 cases, 90 active
    • 18 deaths (one new)
    • 44,229 tests
  • North zone – 630 cases, 111 active
    • 19 deaths (one new)
    • 51,471 tests
  • Central zone – 527 cases, 224 active
    • Five deaths
    • 51,529 tests

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,123 cases, zero active, nine deaths
  • Lethbridge – 139 cases (six new), 44 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 52 cases (two new), 25 active
    • West Lethbridge – 50 cases (two new), six active, one death
    • North Lethbridge – 37 cases (two new), 13 active, one death
  • Cardston County – 100 cases, 14 active, four deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 64 cases, four active, one death
  • County of Warner – 54 cases, one active, one death
  • M.D. of Taber – 37 cases, three active
  • Fort Macleod – 32 cases, eight active, one death (one new)
  • Cypress County – 31 cases, zero active
  • County of Newell – 27 cases (one new), six active
  • Lethbridge County – 27 cases, two active
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 23 cases, three active
  • County of Forty Mile – 16 cases, four active
  • Crowsnest Pass – Two cases, zero active
