CFIA update on unrequested seed packages showing up in mail

Aug 10, 2020 | 2:57 PM

OTTAWA, ON. — In late July, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a warning about unrequested packages of seeds arriving in mailboxes. Those who received the seeds were cautioned not to plant them, as they came from an unknown origin.

The CFIA warning noted, “Unauthorized seeds could be from invasive plants, or carry plant pests, which can be harmful when introduced into Canada. These species can invade agricultural and natural areas, causing serious damage to plant resources”.

To date, more than 750 individuals reported receiving the unknown seeds.

The CFIA continues to collect information on the seed packages and confirms they were postmarked from several different countries. Many are declared as toys or jewelry which makes it difficult to determine the packages contain seeds when they arrive in the country.

Visual inspections of the seeds have, so far, indicated the seeds appear to be low risk.

However, residents continue to be cautioned to not plant the seeds.

If you receive a seed package that you did not order, please contact your regional CFIA office immediately. Keep the seeds and packaging, including the mailing label until a CFIA inspector contacts you with further instructions.
