FORT MACLEOD, AB – Multiple crews responded to a grass fire near the Fort Macleod Golf Course on Friday evening.

Fire Chief Allen Zoeteman told LNN that the station received notice of the blaze at around 5:11 p.m. Initially, only three trucks responded to the scene, but additional support was called in.

“As I got closer to the scene, I was a little concerned, and I called in a Granum Engine and Claresholm Engine as well as a water tender from Claresholm,” Zoeteman said.

He added it took crews about two and a half hours to take down the fire, and as of Monday morning, they aren’t sure what exactly caused the flames.

“We’re still investigating – nothing has been determined as of yet.”

Fortunately, no injuries were reported and all that was lost was “a little bit of prairie grass.”

As for the size, Zoeteman said the fire was roughly 30 to 40 acres and it sparked “right above the Fort Macleod Golf Course up on top [by] the highway”.

SAFETY REMINDER

Although a cause of Friday evening’s fire is not known at this time, Zoeteman did offer some advice for residents as the summer continues.

“As the grass starts to [dry up] and with the high temperatures, it’s [grass fires] certainly more of a concern this time of year,” he said.

“As we get more fall winds, it [fire risk] becomes more of a concern as the year progresses, so just pay attention to your smoking debris and fires, campfires and the like and be careful.”
