COVID mask bylaw still to be defined

Aug 11, 2020 | 12:58 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB– The proposed temporary mandatory mask bylaw in Lethbridge is still to be determined in two weeks.

City Council passed the first and second reading on the proposed bylaw and will return at the next council meeting with the new amendments.

One of Mayor Chris Spearman’s amendments asked to exempt anyone who can’t wear a mask due to an underlying medical issue or disability from having to wear one.

Spearman’s second amendment requests that any business or facility with a public area must post signs at entryways saying the mandatory mask bylaw is in effect.

Those amendments passed with a vote of 6-2, with dissent from Councillors Blaine Hyggen and Ryan Parker

The third amendment that passed will allow the bylaw to be temporary with an expiration date of December 31st, 2020.

Finally, the last amendment enforces the mandatory face coverings rule so that anyone that does not comply, will have to pay a $100 fine.

As Councillor Rob Miyashiro wanted to get the third reading done quickly and nudge closer to the final decision, the vote needed to be unanimous but was defeated, also by Councillors Ryan Parker and Blaine Hyggen.

The temporary mandatory face coverings bylaw will be discussed at Lethbridge’s next council meeting on August 24th.
