Recent increase in thefts from vehicles observed by Picture Butte RCMP

PICTURE BUTTE, AB – RCMP in Picture Butte are reminding residents to keep their vehicles locked and valuables out of sight.

On Monday, August 10, Mounties received complaints of at least four vehicles being entered illegally overnight. Staff Sergeant with Coaldale/Picture Butte RCMP, Glenn Henry, said one truck was stolen.

It was found in a nearby corn field later in the morning.

RCMP say all of the targeted vehicles were believed to have been left unlocked.

Henry told LNN that Mounties recovered some stolen property from the affected vehicles.

Some of the taken items include a toolbox, bank cards, a dash cam, a mailbox key and personal documentation. Henry is sending out a reminder for residents to be vigilant.

Residents are asked that if they see suspicious activity in their neighbourhood, to report it to local law enforcement, and to watch out for their neighbours.

“This [minor property theft] is really an ongoing problem in every community,” Henry remarked.

He referred to minor property theft as a crime of opportunity.

“What the RCMP are looking for is for people to lock their vehicles, remove all their valuables, you know, things like wallets, purses, keys, garage door openers. These types of things – try to think of removing them [or] at the very least, keep them out of sight,” he told LNN.

Anyone with information regarding any crime can contact the Picture Butte RCMP at 403-732-4429 or their local police service. Those wishing to report crime while remaining anonymous can contact CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com.
