LETHBRIDGE, AB– The Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce presented to council it’s “Economics of Childcare” presentation on Monday and asked for funding towards childcare facilities during the pandemic.

The presentation by Chamber President Cindy Vos asked for specific help that included:

“Set up a grant through which qualified childcare centres can be eligible to receive protective equipment such as cloth face coverings, procedural (disposable) face masks, medical-grade gloves and sanitizer.”

“Continue to monitor, publicize and/or locally post the list of daycare providers that the Government of Alberta maintains to aid parents seeking childcare, possibly through the Community Wellbeing and Safety Strategy.”

In addition to the ask, Vos noted the need for supports is required in a timely manner.

“We are only three weeks away from the end of summer. To ensure childcare programs and schools ready, sizeable investments will have to be made by all levels of government now in terms of securing childcare spaces, staff, and PPE.”

The estimated federal spending into child care for the upcoming fiscal year is around $400 million.

It is unclear how large a grant the Chamber would like to see given towards childcare.
