LETHBRIDGE, AB – If you have ever wondered what it is really like to be on a farm, now is your chance.

Alberta Open Farm Days takes place on August 15 and 16, and as Marketing Coordinator Nicola Doherty explains, farmers across the regions are opening their gates to the public.

“It’s for people to kind of get an idea of, A – if you’ve never been on a farm to see what that looks like. Also to get some education around how your food is produced, who produces it, so it’s always great to kind of meet your local farmer.”

“If you like to shop at farmers’ markets, there’s an opportunity to go to where you buy your products from. Often times, products that you’ll find at a grocery store are from local producers as well.”

Each operation will offer something a bit different.

Most will do guided tours but some will also have culinary experiences or opportunities to buy products directly from them.

For the region south of Calgary, more than a dozen farms are taking part.

If you do plan on attending, Doherty asks that you follow COVID-19 guidelines.

That includes maintaining physical distancing, keeping to your family cohort, using hand sanitizer, and wearing a face mask where physical distancing is not possible.

“We’re asking people to schedule their visits online, so you navigate to the business you want to visit, and then on top of there, we’ll have a schedule. That is to ensure that we’re following the guidelines from the provincial government, which are currently 100 people for an outside event that is not seated.”
