Freeland is currently the Deputy Prime Minister and minister of intergovernmental affairs. If officially chosen as the new finance minister, she would be the first woman named to this position.

Justin Trudeau will make small adjustments to his cabinet today following Morneau’s resignation.

In addition to stepping down as finance minister, Morneau has resigned from his post as the MP for Toronto Centre, amid the ongoing WE Charity scandal.
