Cargill has Covid-19 under control at Calgary facility

CALGARY, AB. — An outbreak of COVID-19 at a Cargill meat-processing facility in Calgary appears to be under control.

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health reported last week that five cases of the novel coronavirus had been found at Case Ready Meats.

The plant readies meat products for sale in western Canadian supermarkets and is separate from Cargill’s slaughterhouse in High River.

An Alberta Health Services official says that as of yesterday, the number of cases remained at five and three workers had recovered.

A Cargill spokesman said the last recorded case among Case Ready’s 400 workers was August 10th, and the plant is open and running at full capacity.

The union representing the workers says it is not calling for the plant to be shut down.

Michael Hughes of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 401 says there doesn’t appear to have been transmission within the plant.

He says Cargill generally has been responsive to any concerns the union has raised.
