Fentanyl dealer sentenced to three years in jail

LETHBRIDGE, AB – “I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize I was ruining the community. Now that I have a kid, I have something to look forward to and I want to get this over with.”

Those were the words of Daud Abdul Kadir Mohamed moments before learning his fate in Lethbridge Court of Queen’s Bench Wednesday.

In November 2016, Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) was informed that Mohamed was selling cocaine and fentanyl in the area.

According to the Agreed Statement of Facts, “police were told Mohamed was the main fentanyl dealer in Lethbridge.”

Following searches of his vehicle, a home in Lethbridge, and a house in Coalhurst in December 2016, police confiscated 272 fentanyl pills, $6,795 in cash, and five cell phones.

Depending on how the pills are cut and sold, his counsel Bjoern Wolkmann told court that the drugs were worth anywhere from $20,000-$30,000.

The presiding judge said fentanyl has been a “scourge on society” and called these offenses “very serious”.

He added that a typical sentence for a drug trafficking case like this would be four-to-five years, but given that Mohamed pleaded guilty early on to avoid a lengthy trial and that this was not a matter of large-scale wholesale trade, he accepted the crown and defense’s joint submission in the case.

Mohamed has been sentenced to three years in jail, received a 10-year firearms prohibition, and the items that were seized during the police investigation have been forfeited.

Prior to declaring the sentence, the judge asked Mohamed if he had anything would like to say.

“I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize I was ruining the community. Now that I have a kid, I have something to look forward to and I want to get this over with.”

“I wasn’t born and raised here. I’m from Toronto. I did not grow up with much choices in life. I know I made some bad ones, but I didn’t understand how bad it would be. Now I do.”

“I didn’t understand it at the time because I had to deal with addiction myself.”
