Fake mask exemption cards being sold in Lethbridge

Sep 3, 2020 | 2:07 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB– The City of Lethbridge is warning citizens to be aware of imitation “Mask Exemption Cards” being sold online and on Facebook.

As it stands, the City has not issued a card to tell someone why they would have an exemption to the bylaw.

The city says that if someone asks you why you are not wearing a mask, the person only has to say they are exempt and does not have to provide private health information.

Businesses must post a sign about Bylaw 6239, but they also may have additional policies in place beyond the City’s bylaw.

The bylaw is the minimum requirement and businesses may choose to implement additional measures to protect their staff and customers.

City officials say the fake cards going around have stirred up some conversation about the honesty of individuals that are “exempt.”

“We’re relying on people’s honesty really to follow the intent and the spirit of the bylaw and to state that verbally if they are asked.” Says General Manager, Recreation & Culture, Robin Harper.

The City has issued no official card and is concerned about the fact that the 311 number on it was misleading.
