Okotoks Dawgs to host 2021 WCBL All-Star Game

Sep 3, 2020 | 8:08 AM

OKOTOKS, AB – The 2021 Western Canadian Baseball League All-Star Game will take place in Okotoks.

The league made the announcement on Wednesday, saying an agreement couldn’t be reached between the WCBL and the original hosts, the Edmonton Prospects.

Therefore, the league’s top stars will hit the diamond at Seaman Stadium in 2021. The All-Star festivities will not only include the game itself, but a Home Run Derby and concert, as well.

The Okotoks Dawgs are the league’s top drawing franchise, with an average of 4,000 fans per game. When baseball returns to their home diamond in 2021, fans will see a new viewing area called the Core 4. The organization plans to debut a section that’s similar to the boxes atop the famous Green Monster at Boston’s Fenway Park.

MOVE FOR EDMONTON

Earlier this week, the Edmonton Prospects announces its plans to move to Spruce Grove for the 2022 season. A group led by former Oiler Randy Gregg secured a 10-year lease from the City of Edmonton to operate Re/Max Field, home of the Prospects.

Many expected the team to work with the group in sharing the stadium, but that was not meant to be. Team owner Pat Cassidy said in a release that he anticipates the team will play in what he referred to as the Spruce Grove Metro Ballpark two seasons from now.

Cassidy noted that planning and engineering is underway for construction. The Edmonton club has played out of Re/Max Field since 2012.

Earlier this year, the WCBL cancelled the 2020 season because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
