LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has released Friday’s report on COVID-19, detailing the numbers over the past 24 hours.

164 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 14,474. Of those, 1,433 cases are active and 12,799 people have recovered.

The bulk of the new caseload is, once again, in the Calgary and Edmonton Zones.

Only two of the new infections are in the South Health Zone, both of which were in Lethbridge County.

The M.D. of Taber no longer has any active cases.

There were no additional COVID-19 deaths anywhere in Alberta, meaning the virus has still claimed 242 lives.

Provincially, 47 patients are currently hospitalized and nine have been admitted to intensive care units.

1,005,001 tests have been completed among 792,965 different people.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says she understands that people are looking to get out of town and have fun over the Labour Day long weekend, but it has to be done safely.

“I know many people are excited to enjoy it, however, the number of cases being reported today is a clear reminder that we cannot afford to be reckless. COVID-19 does not take holidays and we have seen weekend barbeques and other gatherings spark outbreaks in the past. I want to encourage all Albertans to have fun while making safety a priority this weekend.”

She is encouraging travellers to check if the communities they are visiting have any bylaws that mandate the use of face masks.

Regardless of where you go, and even if you don’t, Dr. Hinshaw says to ensure you are practicing good hygiene and maintaining physical distancing from others.
