Unemployment rate at 8.6 percent in August for Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The latest unemployment figures have been released for the province.

In August, Alberta’s jobless rate was 11.8 percent, a significant drop from the 12.8 percent rate in July.

Again, the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat economic region had the lowest unemployment rate among regions in Alberta, at 8.6 percent. In July, the rate was 9.5 percent.

Below is a breakdown of the rates per economic region in the province, with July’s jobless rate listed in parentheses:

  • Calgary: 14.2% (14.9)
  • Edmonton: 14.1% (15.5)
  • Camrose-Drumheller: 13.4% (13.1)
  • Red Deer: 12.9% (14.0)
  • Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River: 12.1% (14.4)
  • Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake: 11.8% (12.0)
  • Lethbridge-Medicine Hat: 8.6% (9.5)

Looking at the unemployment rate by age and gender, the province said for youth (male and female, ages 15-24), the rate was 27.0 percent.

For adults (male and female, ages 25 and up), the rate was 9.6 percent.

CANADA-WIDE

Across the country, Statistics Canada listed the unemployment rate for August at 10.2 percent. That’s a slight drop from July’s 10.9 percent.
