Terry Fox Run going digital for 40th anniversary, you can take part anywhere

LETHBRIDGE, AB – There is a new way to take part in this year’s Terry Fox Run and to raise money for cancer research.

Co-Chair of the Lethbridge Terry Fox Run Lorien Johansen says, due to COVID-19 limitations, they are not able to hold their traditional large group run on Sunday, September 20.

Instead, people are able to donate or sponsor a participant online or through a new mobile app.

“We’re encouraging people to do a run or a walk or bicycling or rollerblading or walking their dog or calisthenics in their backyard, whatever flavour of activity they want to do and film themselves and post the video to our Facebook page as a collective ‘We’re being active together apart’.”

Johansen and her co-chair will post live updates from what would have been the running track along 6 Ave South by the Civic Centre Track.

The fundraising goal for the Lethbridge run is $20,000. As of the time of publication, more than $2,500 has already been donated.

“That goal was put into place before the option to go digital. Obviously, we’d still love to hit that benchmark. If we don’t, we understand that a lot of people are experiencing financial strictness and less-than-desirable economic times,” says Johansen.

“We’re not focusing so much on the dollar values this year, but on the remembering of Terry, the celebrating the 40th, being active on your own, and the digital check-ins. We’re going to focus more this year on the stories than we are the dollar total.”

If you have any Terry Fox Run-related stories you would like to share, the Galt Museum looks to set up an exhibit in celebration of the 40th anniversary.

“Something about the Terry Fox Run that is a special memory or strikes a chord, perhaps you met somebody from Terry’s family or Terry himself – any of those sorts of memories or stories you have.”

The Galt Museum exhibit is expected to open in the first week of October. To submit your stories for the exhibit, you can send an email to lethbridgeterryfoxrun@gmail.com or post on the Lethbridge Terry Fox Run Facebook page.
