U of L women’s soccer program suspended due to break in sport cohort protocols

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The women’s soccer program at the University of Lethbridge has been suspended.

This comes after it was found that the program was breaking sport cohort protocols, according to a statement from the U of L.

Canada West and U SPORT soccer seasons were cancelled this fall because of COVID-19. However, teams were allowed to practice in a cohort setting under regular season eligibility rules.

The statement notes that the Pronghorns women’s soccer program was found to be letting players outside the Horns soccer sport cohort participate in their practices.

This is in contravention to the university’s sport cohort protocols.

“Upon discovering these violations, Pronghorn Athletics immediately suspended the program and notified Alberta Health Services that sport cohort protocols had been broken,” it said in the statement.

“There is no indication anyone associated with the program or the practices has contracted or been exposed to COVID-19, only that protocol was broken. Pronghorn Athletics will continue to work with Alberta Health Services and follow their direction going forward.”

Director of Pronghorn Athletics, Neil Langevin has voiced his displeasure.

“We were very meticulous in educating our coaches on what was expected of them during this time and what our specific COVID-19 protocols entailed. While we are confident everyone associated with the program is healthy, the protocols are in place for a very good reason and no one should have been put at risk,” he stated.

“There is nothing more important than the health and safety of our student-athletes and our potential recruits.”

The program and practices will resume based on the advice of Alberta Health Services.
