Only three of Alberta’s 113 new COVID cases are in South Zone

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released Thursday’s report on COVID-19, detailing the numbers over the past 24 hours.

113 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 15,304. Of those, 1,494 cases are active while 13,557 people have recovered.

The majority of the new infections are in the Edmonton Zone. Meanwhile, in the South Health Zone, just three people tested positive including one each in Lethbridge, Lethbridge County, and the County of Forty Mile.

Out of the province’s five health zones, the South Zone has the smallest number of active cases at 37.

In just the last day, five Albertans died as a result of the virus with two each in the Calgary and North Zones and one in the Edmonton Zone. To date, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 253 Albertans.

Provincially, 43 patients are currently hospitalized and seven have been admitted to intensive care units.

1,072,681 tests have been completed among 838,433 different Albertans.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw briefly mentioned in Thursday’s press conference that indoor hot tubs, dry saunas, and steam saunas can open provided there is enhanced cleaning, distancing between cohorts, and other measures put in place.

So far, there have not been any confirmed COVID cases in any of these facilities.

The regional breakdown for COVID-19 in Alberta is as follows:

  • Calgary zone – 7,988 cases, 594 active
    • 120 deaths (two new)
    • 340,649 tests
  • Edmonton zone – 3,722 cases, 596 active
    • 68 deaths (one new)
    • 276,705 tests
  • South zone – 1,774 cases, 37 active
    • 25 deaths
    • 57,782 tests
  • North zone – 1,154 cases, 215 active
    • 33 deaths (two new)
    • 77,558 tests
  • Central zone – 629 cases, 45 active
    • Seven deaths
    • 70,803 tests

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,128 cases, two active, nine deaths
  • Lethbridge – 164 cases (one new), 11 active, two deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 65 cases (one new), eight active, one death
    • South Lethbridge – 59 cases, two active
    • North Lethbridge – 40 cases, one active, one death
  • Cardston County – 104 cases, three active, five deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 72 cases, three active, two deaths
  • County of Warner – 62 cases, three active, one death
  • Lethbridge County – 42 cases (one new), 10 active
  • M.D. of Taber – 39 cases, zero active
  • Fort Macleod – 33 cases, zero active, three deaths
  • County of Newell – 32 cases, zero active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 31 cases, zero active
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 26 cases, zero active, one death
  • County of Forty Mile – 25 cases (one new), four active
  • Crowsnest Pass – Two cases, zero active
