AHS hopes to target contact tracing in schools

Sep 14, 2020 | 5:34 PM

EDMONTON, AB. – Alberta Health Services has released the updated report on COVID-19, detailing the numbers over the past three days. The total number of cases increased by 105 on Sept. 11, 173 on Sept. 12, and 140 on Sept. 13.

That equals 418 news cases since Friday. Of that number….there are five new cases in the South Zone, with two cases for Lethbridge — both in West Lethbridge.

During her daily updated on COVID-19 DR. Deena Hinshaw, confirmed that the new cases include 42 linked to 35 schools.

She underscores the fact that these specific cases were contracted outside of school and the illness is not being spread inside schools. There are six schools with two or more infections four in Calgary, one in Edmonton and one in Lethbridge but there’s no indication the virus spread within those institutions.

Hinshaw says if a student goes to school while infectious, all their classmates must typically stay home for 14 days. She recognizes measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 in schools are a big inconvenience to families.

However, AHS gathering more information about who is most at risk of contracting the novel coronavirus at school will help the government take a more targeted approach in the future.

There are now 15,833 confirmed cases in the province. Of those, 1,538 cases are active while 14,041 people have recovered.

This includes just five more infections in the South Health Zone including two for Lethbridge – both were on the west side. with two of those being in West Lethbridge and one in Lethbridge County.

There was one additional COVID-19 death in the province, in Edmonton, meaning the lives of 254 people have been claimed

Provincially, 37 patients are currently hospitalized and seven have been admitted to intensive care units.

1,130,828 tests have been completed among 877,000 different people.
