CRANBROOK, B.C. – Firefighters continue to make progress battling a significant wildfire near Canal Flats.

B.C. Wildfire Service says the blaze is now classified as “being held”, meaning it is not expected to spread beyond the existing and pre-determined boundaries.

The fire is estimated to have burned 8,090 hectares of land and forced residents of several homes near Canal Flats to evacuate. The evacuation alert remains in effect.

A planned ignition on the southeast flank was successfully completed Friday and throughout the weekend, bringing the fire’s edge down to more accessible terrain.

As many as 88 firefighters, four helicopters, and eight pieces of heavy equipment remain on scene to monitor the fire and conduct small-scale hand ignitions meant to establish control lines.
