More time needed for psych exam for man charged with killing Red Deer doctor

RED DEER, AB – A mental health assessment ordered for a man accused of killing a Red Deer doctor last month has yet to be completed.

The five-day psychiatric exam for Deng Mabiour was ordered last Wednesday when he made his second appearance in Red Deer provincial court. He made his third appearance Monday morning where Judge Bert Skinner gave more time for it to be completed.

“(The) psychiatric assessment is still having problems with you to see if you are fit to stand trial,” Skinner told Mabiour. “An additional 30 day time period for your assessment, sir.”

The case is due back in court Oct. 14.

Mabiour, who is 54, is charged with first-degree murder in the Aug. 10 slaying of Dr. Walter Reynolds at the Village Mall Walk-In Clinic.

Reynolds, a 45-year-old husband and father of two, was attacked with a weapon while working at the clinic and later died in hospital.

Mabiour went on several tirades during his appearance last week, demanding to know why Skinner wouldn’t ask him why he killed his doctor.

Monday morning when Skinner requested that Mabiour be given a legal aid application, he again told court that he didn’t want a lawyer and intends to represent himself.

“Why should legal aid represent me?” Mabiour said. “Canada court locks people away. That’s why I represent myself. I don’t want to be represented by stupid legal aid.”

Mabiour remains in custody at the Red Deer Remand Centre and appeared in court on Monday via CCTV.
