Smile Cookie Week raising funds for Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation

LETHBRIDGE, AB – On your coffee run at Tim Hortons this week, you might want to add a Smile Cookie to your order.

It’s Smile Cookie Week, an initiative that sees Tim Hortons restaurants across Canada supporting more than 550 charities, hospitals and communities nationwide.

One of those benefitting from the week is the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation (CRHF).

“It’s one of our favourite weeks of the whole year when cookies support the hospital,” said the CRHF’s executive director Jason VandenHoek.

“We’ve been working with Tim Hortons for years and we’re very lucky to have them choose us kind of year after year as [one of] their charities of choice.”

Last year, the Smile Cookie campaign raised over $27,000 in the community of Lethbridge and surrounding area.

“We ate a lot of cookie last year and we’re hoping folks in Lethbridge step up this year, too,” VandenHoek told Lethbridge News Now.

However, he understands that many people are in a tight financial situation due to COVID-19.

“With the current situation that we’re all in, we’re happy with any support that we can get,” he said.

“They [Tim Hortons] always work really hard to make this campaign as successful as they can, so every little bit helps, and we’re just honoured that we get to participate again.”

VandenHoek said the funds raised support “the greatest needs of the hospital” and address immediate needs at the Lethbridge facility.

“That can vary from anything from equipment to funding programs, so it’s just dollars that we can put into immediate use at the Chinook Regional Hospital and donor dollars touch every part of the hospital, so kind of whatever is the most emergent need is where that money will go.”

Smile Cookie Week runs until Sunday, September 20.
