Two people from Red Deer were apprehended for allegedly using counterfeit American cash.

On Friday, September 11, 2020, Nanton RCMP was made aware of reports that the bills were being used in the community. There were also reports of counterfeit currency in Claresholm and Fort Macleod in the following days.

Then on Monday, a community message was sent out business in Claresholm advising of the illegitimate bills. They also provided descriptions of the suspects.

RCMP in Claresholm were informed the following day that the suspects were in town.

A man and a woman were arrested. A search warrant conducted on the accused’s vehicle reportedly found evidence of the offences.

A 37-year-old man from Red Deer faces three counts of uttering counterfeit money, three counts of illegal possession of government documents, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, one count of trafficking in property obtained by crime under $5000, and one count of drug possession.

A 26-year-old woman from Red Deer has been charged with two counts of uttering counterfeit money, three counts of illegal possession of government documents, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, and one count of drug possession.

The names of the suspects are not being released at this time as they have yet to be sworn into court.

There is a possibility that counterfeit U.S. currency is still circulating in Southern Alberta.

Residents are asked to remain vigilant and to report any suspect bills.
