CALGARY, AB – Charges have been laid after a man from Calgary allegedly took part in activities with the Islamic State.

The RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team in Alberta have charged Jamal Taan Borhot, 30.

They claim Borhot travelled to Syria between May 9, 2013, and April 8, 2014, where he committed terrorist activities benefitting the group.

He faces three counts of participation in activity of a terrorist group contrary to section 83.18 of the Criminal Code. Each count has a maximum imprisonment of 10 years.

“Terrorist investigations by their very nature are extremely lengthy, complex and require the support of both domestic and international partners,” says Superintendent Stacey Talbot, Officer-in-Charge of “K” Division INSET. “It is through an integrated law enforcement approach, that the RCMP and its partners are in a better position to prevent, detect, deny and respond to threats to Canada’s national security.”

The announced charges are now before the courts and RCMP will not be able to comment any further.

Following a judicial hearing, Borhot was remanded into custody and will appear in Calgary Provincial Court on Monday, September 28, 2020.
