LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a great Tuesday night for Lethbridge’s Ridly Greig.

Greig was among seven Western Hockey League (WHL) players selected in the first round of the 2020 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft.

The event was conducted online, due to COVID-19. It was no shocker when Quebec’s Alexis Lafrenière was selected first overall by the New York Rangers.

Making history was Quinton Byfield, selected second by the Los Angeles Kings. Byfield became the highest drafted Black player in NHL history.

Later in the draft, the Ottawa Senators selected Ridly Greig with the 28th pick. Greig plays for the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL. At forward, he picked up career highs in goals (26), assists (34) and points in 56 games during the 2019-2020 season.

Through 123 career WHL regular season games, Greig has collected 96 points (40 goals, 56 assists).

Below is a list of the other WHL players selected, with the team that picked them, their current WHL club and where they are from:

  • #13: Seth Jarvis (forward); Carolina Hurricanes; Portland Winterhawks; Winnipeg, Manitoba
  • #16: Kaiden Guhle (defense); Montreal Canadians; Prince Albert Raiders; Sherwood Park, Alberta
  • #19: Braden Schneider (defense); New York Rangers; Brandon Wheat Kings; Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
  • #24: Connor Zary (forward); Calgary Flames; Kamloops Blazers; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
  • #26: Jake Neighbours (forward); St. Louis Blues; Edmonton Oil Kings; Airdrie, Alberta
  • #31: Ozzy Wiesblatt (forward); San Jose Sharks; Prince Alberta Raiders; Calgary, Alberta

All players listed above, as well as Greig, appeared in the 2020 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Hamilton, Ontario. The 2020 NHL Draft continues Wednesday.
