Province touts record number of physicians, but South Zone sees little movement

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new report from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta shows a growing number of medical practitioners in the province.

In the third quarter of 2020 (July-September), there were 11,152 fully-registered physicians in the province. An accompanying media release from the Government of Alberta claims this is the “first time in Alberta’s history” that there are more than 11,000 doctors registered to practice in the province.

“This report shows that doctors continue to choose to live and practise in Alberta in impressive numbers – and for good reason,” says Health Minister Tyler Shandro. “Alberta pays more than any other province, has lower taxes, and now has the most attractive compensation package available for rural and remote doctors in Canada.”

The numbers represent an increase of 246 physicians (+2.3 per cent) from the same time last year, 200 of whom went to Calgary or Edmonton.

310 are registered in Lethbridge, meaning there are now three more doctors in the city than in 2019.

The report gave numbers for 18 different communities but did not specifically name smaller towns like Pincher Creek that have seen an exodus of physicians this year.

Overall in the South Health Zone, the region had a net loss of four physicians, a decrease of 0.6 per cent.

Province-wide, we have seen 130 more doctors who practice general family medicine, which saw more growth than all other medical specialties.
