U of L researching issues related to medically assisted dying in Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, AB– What is your opinion on the controversial topic of medically assisted dying(MAiD)?

University of Lethbridge researcher Dr. Julia Brassolotto and a team of researchers have received an Insight Development Grant to examine ethical and policy issues related to MAiD in rural Alberta.

Since the federal government legalized MAiD in 2016, very little research has been done on how the law is affecting those in rural communities.

Data from Alberta Health Services points out there are differences in knowledge and attitudes about MAiD between urban and rural communities.

The project is currently in the ethics approval stage, after which Brassolotto and her group will examine the issues related to MAiD.

“Our goal is to better understand MAiD in rural Alberta,” says Brassolotto.

“We want to understand how current policies affect rural communities and gain insight into people’s lived experiences of related ethical issues.”

Brassolotto and her team will gain a clear understanding of the local policy landscape and the influences that have shaped people’s views.

The team’s goal is to add to the body of knowledge about MAiD by giving it some rural context.
