961 COVID cases confirmed in Alberta over long weekend

LETHBRIDGE, AB — Alberta Health Services has released Tuesday’s report on COVID-19, detailing the numbers from the long weekend. This update includes case numbers from Friday to Monday.

961 cases were confirmed during this time with 236 on Friday, 259 on Saturday, 246 on Sunday, and 220 on Monday.

This works out to 240 positive tests every day.

To date, 20,956 people in the province have tested positive. Of those, 2,615 cases are active and 18,055 people have recovered.

64 new cases were confirmed in the South Health Zone over the last four days with 52 just in Lethbridge. Each of the city’s three sections saw 17-to-18 new infections.

Lethbridge now has 101 active cases, making up the bulk of the South Zone’s 160 active.

Lethbridge County saw another six infections, Brooks had three, the County of Newell had two, and the County of Warner had one.

Over the four day period, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says approximately 57,500 tests were conducted across Alberta.

In recent weeks, there has been an average of 16,000 COVID-19 tests every day.

Four Albertans died due to COVID with three in the Edmonton Zone and one in the Calgary Zone, meaning it has now claimed the lives of 286 in the province.

Provincially, 97 patients are currently hospitalized and 13 have been admitted to intensive care units.

Dr. Hinshaw mentioned a new COVID-19 Experiences and Impact Survey, which can be accessed through this link.

It asks Albertans about their perspectives on the pandemic and how it has been handled so far.

The regional breakdown for COVID-19 in Alberta is as follows:

  • Calgary zone – 9,672 cases, 754 active
    • 132 deaths (one new)
    • 40 in hospital, six in ICU
  • Edmonton zone – 6,877 cases, 1,444 active
    • 86 deaths (three new)
    • 44 in hospital, five in ICU
  • South zone – 1,990 cases, 160 active
    • 26 deaths
    • Four in hospital
  • North zone – 1,575 cases, 127 active
    • 35 deaths
    • Six in hospital, two in ICU
  • Central zone – 784 cases, 109 active
    • Seven deaths
    • Three in hospital

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,135 cases (three new), four active, nine deaths
  • Lethbridge – 274 cases (52 new), 101 active, two deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 109 cases (17 new), 36 active, one death
    • South Lethbridge – 97 cases (18 new), 37 active
    • North Lethbridge – 68 cases (17 new), 28 active, one death
  • Cardston County – 106 cases, three active, five deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 96 cases (six new), 40 active
  • Medicine Hat – 84 cases, three active, two deaths
  • County of Warner – 65 cases (one new), three active, one death
  • M.D. of Taber – 44 cases, zero active
  • County of Forty Mile – 42 cases, three active
  • County of Newell – 35 cases (two new), three active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 33 cases, zero active
  • Fort Macleod – 33 cases, zero active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 27 cases, zero active, two deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – Two cases, zero active
