Man accused of murdering Alberta doctor deemed fit to stand trial

RED DEER, AB. — The man accused in the violent death of a Red Deer doctor this summer has will stand trial.

Deng Mabiour is charged with first-degree murder in the Aug. 10 killing of Dr. Walter Reynolds. He is also charged with counts of assault with a weapon and assault of a police officer.

Reynolds, a 45-year-old husband and father of two, was attacked with a weapon while working at the Village Mall Walk-In Clinic and later died in hospital.

Judge Gordon Yake heard Wednesday morning that the psychiatric assessment ordered for Mabiour in September has found that he is fit to stand trial for the killing.

Mabiour, who is 54, has been in custody since he was arrested at the scene and appeared in Red Deer provincial court Wednesday morning via CCTV from the Calgary Remand Centre.

In his previous court appearances Mabiour acted erratically and demanded that he be asked why he killed his family doctor. He also rejected a judge’s recommendation that he find himself a lawyer.

Wednesday afternoon, he again insisted that he does not want a lawyer and that he now needs more time to consider his options.

“I don’t want a lawyer. I don’t want legal aid,” he insisted. “What can a lawyer do for me? A lawyer can’t do anything. I’m better off without a lawyer.”

The case returns to court Nov. 6.
