LETHBRIDGE, AB– When the Western Hockey League announced on Wednesday (Oct 14) the 2021-22 season will start on January 8th, there were many questions still left to answer.

After speaking with Lethbridge Hurricanes GM Peter Anholt, he says many questions he can’t answer at this time.

“Questions will have to be worked out through our health authorities, all the different provincial health authorities and state authorities too from our league standpoint.”

When asked about what will happen with fans for the upcoming season, he said it’s too early to tell.

Anholt says as the pandemic progresses, once time passes and it gets closer to January 8th, the league will be able to assess what the situation is like.

He says if a league like the NHL can play safely, so can the WHL.

“We can work through this – I think that we can find a way to work through this and that’s going to be a real key.”

Players have been practicing individually and training as any other offseason, and once January comes, training camps will be done safely.

The plan is to play the other four teams in the Hurricanes Division to limit travel and Anholt says, “that will have to do.”

Anholt is happy to be hearing some good news and says, “right now, we’re playing.”

The season is projected to start on January 8th, 2021, and there will be more information as the pandemic continues.
