Oct 27, 2020 | 1:12 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A Medicine Hat family physician has been sanctioned by a hearing tribunal after admitting to performing procedures in unaccredited, non-hospital surgical facilities.

In a release, the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) says Dr. Adriaan Kriel was accused of displaying a lack of skill and judgment in his medical practice after performing an eyelid revision surgery and liposuction on two patients. Both experienced complications that Kriel failed to treat appropriately.

Kriel also inaccurately reported to CPSA he had ceased performing blepharoplasties and any surgical procedures requiring sedation.

Kriel admitted to the allegations and a joint submission was made with the CPSA on sanctions.

  • Dr. Kriel is suspended from practice for 12 months, to be served in full. Dr. Kriel’s practice permit is currently suspended as of Aug. 10, 2020.
  • Dr. Kriel must sign a written undertaking with CPSA, confirming he will not perform any procedure that must be provided in an accredited facility.
  • Dr. Kriel is responsible for the full costs of the investigation and hearing, totalling $19,252.30.

Full details from the CPSA can be found here.
