This weekend’s time change a good opportunity to check smoke alarms

LETHBRIDGE, AB – This weekend will not only see Halloween, but also the end of daylight saving time.

Clocks get set back one hour early Sunday morning, November 1.

The City of Lethbridge Fire & Emergency Services has sent out a reminder that the time change is also a good time to check your home’s smoke detectors.

Expiry dates on detectors should be reviewed annually and according to local emergency officials, “putting in fresh batteries is an important step” to make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

Fire crews in Lethbridge say they’ve noticed an increase in alarm calls over the last year due to cooking.

“In most cases, no one is seriously hurt, and this can be attributed to smoke alarms warning people to leave their homes,” the city said in a release.

“With the extra hour gained this weekend, spend a few minutes to make sure everyone in your home recognizes the sound of the smoke alarm and knows what to do in case of a fire.”
