Council hears opposition presentation to overdose prevention site

LETHBRIDGE, AB– An opposition presentation to Lethbridge’s Overdose Prevention Society’s portable tent was provided to City Council at Monday’s meeting.

Those who presented want, “City action to end the illegal Supervised Drug Consumption.”

The tent has been operating since September 25th and has stirred up much criticism.

According to the one presenter and resident, Roy Remus, the tent is serving “Lethbridge’s street people, homeless and drug-addicted.”

Much of Remus’ argument is that after the ARCHES site closed down, area health was “coming back”, but then the Lethbridge Overdose Prevention Site (LOPS) popped up and residents are worried again.

The presentation claimed the site is “not licensed or supported by City, the Province, or Canada Health Services”, and is “luring street people from existing, better, co-located services.”

“Galt Gardens is becoming an unsafe no-go zone,” said Remus, who is looking to the city to do something about the site and wants it to be shut down by the city.

Other information in the presentation claimed the tent is:

  • “Exploiting street people, many are indigenous”
  • “City Liability – overdose in-tent? An indigenous genocide claim?”
  • “Misuse of City’s First Responder Resources”

The ultimate ask is that:

“City Council act to end LOPS’ illegal SDCS activity immediately using whatever powers and influences it may legally possess, and to answer the above-noted questions in a comprehensive manner satisfactory to affected citizens.”

The presentation was accepted as information and will be discussed at a later time.
