TABER, AB – Taber’s Aquafun Centre and Community Centre are receiving some lighting upgrades.

Thanks to grant funding from Farm Credit Canada’s AgriSpirit Fund and the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC), the facilities’ indoor, outdoor and emergency lighting will be upgraded to LED technology.

The Town of Taber says the annual energy savings at the Community Centre are estimated to be around 146,083 kWh/year, the equivalent to $17,530.01 in cost savings for the municipality.

The retrofit at the Aquafun Centre will save approximately 81,949 kWh/year and result in $9,833.90 cost savings annually.

The town added that with the switch to LED lighting, the annual greenhouse gas emissions for the Community Centre and Aquafun Centre will be reduced by 83 tonnes and 46 tonnes, respectively.

“We are grateful to be able to upgrade the lighting in two of our recreation facilities through the use of these grants,” said Director of Recreation Dawn Phillips.

“These upgrades will not only help reduce operational costs for the municipality, but will also help our facilities become efficient for years to come.”

The total cost for the upgrades will come out to $126,377.68 with $25,000 of that being funded by Farm Credit Canada and $94,783.26 from the MCCAC. The Town of Taber will pay the remaining $6,594.42.

Upgrading work began on October 26 and is set to be finished in mid-December.
