Lethbridge Public Schools take action on government restrictions

Nov 24, 2020 | 9:25 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Just hours after the Government of Alberta announced mandatory restrictions for schools will commence at month-end, Lethbridge Public Schools announced actions to follow through.

Beginning Monday, Nov. 30, students in grades 7 through 12 will move to at-home learning.

Also, students and staff will have their scheduled Christmas break following the last day of class on Dec. 18. The first day of class, Jan. 4, will continue with at-home schooling.

Grades K-6 students, including Early Education Program students, will continue in-person learning to Dec. 18. Following the scheduled Christmas break, classes will be delivered at-home, using online delivery from Jan. 4 through to Jan. 8.

Superintendent for the Lethbridge School Division, Cheryl Gilmore says Schools in Lethbridge have been successful through the pandemic.

“I believe our schools have been doing incredibly well, I can say up to this point and not to say it won’t happen, we haven’t had any in school transmission of COVID-19 and any cases in our schools have been from the community.”

Gilmore thinks that taking this time to have at-home schooling is smart for the time being to see what happens with the case numbers.

All students are set to resume in-person classes on Jan. 11.

For public middle schools, Grade 6 students will continue to go to school until Dec. 18. These students will continue to be bused to school as usual.

An important note for high school students and staff is that diploma exams are optional for the rest of the school year. Students and their families can choose whether to write an exam or receive an exemption for the January, April, June and August 2021 exams.

Details regarding opting into exams will be sent by schools in the near future.
