LETHBRIDGE, AB – Despite some changes made due to COVID-19, this year’s Legion poppy campaign was a success.

Final figures are still being tallied, but the Lethbridge Legion, General Stewart Branch says as of November 25, the campaign collected just over $97,000 thanks to donations from residents, businesses and from wreath/cross sales.

“It [the campaign] was helped immensely, due to a few large generous donations totally $25,000,” the Legion said in a news release.

“Of these, three came in partnership of donors and the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta in the amount of $21,000 in donations. One was from Cor Van Raay from $10,000, while the others were in amounts of another 10,000 and 1,000 respectfully. These two donors wish to remain anonymous.”

Additionally, the Lethbridge United Services Institute made a $4,000 donation.

“The level of support this year was overwhelming,” said Lethbridge Legion president Michael Cormican, noting frequent calls were made to replenish the supply of poppies during the campaign.

“This year was the 75th anniversary of the end of WW2, and the public awareness of this milestone may have contributed to increased donations this year under a COVID-19 environment in honouring our veterans.”

POSTER AND LITERARY CONTEST

The Royal Canadian Legion’s Poster and Literary contest is on-going. Youth are invited to submit artwork or written pieces commemorating the sacrifices of veterans.

Glenn Miller with the Lethbridge Legion said they’re actually shocked at the low number of submissions received this year compared to years past.

“The branch strongly encourages parents to have their children participate in the next few days ahead,” he said.

Submissions can be dropped off at the Lethbridge Legion. The deadline for this year’s contest is December 1.
